Merry Christmas OR Happy Holidays?

December 25, 2008

The answer is: Merry Christmas

My mom once asked me why some people write “Merry Xmas” or why someone on the news is complaining about a government official saying “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays”. In a much nicer way, I told her it’s because those people suck.

I’m not Christian.
I don’t really celebrate Christmas.

But I think that if someone says “Merry Christmas” to you then it is common courtesy that you say “Merry Christmas” back. They are sharing their happiness for their holiday with you. You’re not being converted, no one is dipping you into a lake and forcing you to change your belief system. So stop being lame and just say “Merry Christmas”. One major thing I’ve learned from living in two cultures is that if you respect someone else’s beliefs they are more likely to respect yours.
